This year's Spin-off Austria Conference invited prominent guests to deliver inspiring keynotes, highlighted successful founders of Austrian university spin-offs as well as academia-related unicorns and provided space for discussion among various stakeholders such as investors, university leaders or legal experts to give the audience a deep insight into the dos and don'ts of technology transfer. The program was rounded off by the awarding of the most entrepreneurial universities in Austria.

The online conference's topic was "Spin-offs – The Backbone of European Sovereignty in Technology" 

Once again this year, the Spin-off Initiative invites you to discuss the status quo of the Austrian spin-off landscape under the title "Austrian spin-offs on the rise? Cultivating a thriving spin-off ecosystem". The online conference  took place online on 23.11.2023.

Siraj Khaliq is a senior advisor at Atomico focusing on investments in “Frontier” technologies, including companies in AI / computer vision, robotics, quantum computing and synthetic biology. He led investments into PsiQuantum, CloudNC, Graphcore and Scandit, among others. Siraj formerly co-founded SF-based The Climate Corporation, an early tech startup unicorn acquired by Monsanto in 2013. He was also an early engineer at Google (2001), helping launch several well-known products over his five year tenure there.

Martin Bruncko is a technology entrepreneur, executive, investor, and former senior public policy leader. He has extensive expertise in building transformational deep tech companies, as well as from top echelons of national and international policymaking in the areas of financeand innovations.He is currently the Executive Vice President for Europe at Binance.Martin has held executive, board and advisory positions in several highly innovative, R&D-based companies, including AeroMobil, which has been a pioneering player in the advancedpersonal aerial vehicle space (a.k.a. “flying cars”) and a cancer immunotherapy start up Camarque.He was also the founder of London-based Steam Capital and founder and executive chairman of Neulogy, the first major advisory and investment boutique in Central and Eastern Europe focusing on R&D, innovations and deep tech start-ups. Neulogy effectively kickstarted the tech ecosystem in Slovakia. He was also a member of the investment committee of the European Innovation Council Fund, which is the largest deep tech investment fund in Europe.Previously, Martin held several senior positions in the Government of Slovakia, including junior minister for innovations and deputy for European affairs of the minister of finance. In this role, he was responsible for national policy in the area of knowledge economy, e-government and EU/Eurozone economic and financial affairs.He was also a Board Member of the European Stability Mechanism (previously EFSF) and Senior Director and Head of Europe at the World Economic Forum.Martin has remained involved in public policy, including as an official advisor to the European Commissioner for Research and Innovations and to the Government of Dubai. He is the founder of Druid Collective, a non-profit initiative of the World Economic Forum’s Young Global Leaders (YGLs) and Technology Pioneers focused on helping exceptional start-upsaround the world to bring breakthrough science from lab to impact.Martin holds a B.A. from Stanford University and M.P.A. from Harvard Kennedy School. In 2012, he was honored as a Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum.

Stéphane Ouaki Head of Department - European Innovation Council (EIC) in the newly established European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency. In his role, he ensures effective and efficient implementation of the EIC from the emergence of new technologies having the potential to generate game changing innovation up to the scaling up of deep-tech enterprises (mainly startups and SMEs). He also chairs the Investment Committee of the EIC Fund. Beyond the EIC, Stéphane oversees the implementation of the Research, Innovation and Digitisation Window under the InvestEU Programme. 

Previously, he was the head of unit for Financial Instruments in DG Research and Innovation at the European Commission. Before joining DG R&I, he was the head of unit for the Connecting Europe Facility and investment strategies in DG MOVE. Beforehand, he was Deputy Head of Cabinet of Commissioner Vladimír Špidla, responsible for employment, social affairs, and equal opportunities (2004-2010). Previously, he was part of the Commission’s team negotiating with the Czech Republic its terms of accession to the EU (2001-03), and then moved on to be part of the team coordinating the enlargement strategy (2003-04).

Kavita cares deeply  about science that addresses societal challenges, especially climate change,  energy, and sustainability. Kavita holds a B.Sc. in physics and a M.S. and  Ph.D. in materials science and engineering with experiences at the French  Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA), Université Grenoble  Alpes, University of Paul Sabatier Toulouse, TU Delft, St. Stephen’s College  and several other universities.She developed interdisciplinary  expertise linking science with societal challenges as a postdoctoral fellow  in Science, Technology and Public Policy at Harvard University and as faculty  at the Center for Global Sustainability at the University of Maryland. Kavita  has led multiple grant-funded projects and published in top tier academic  journals. She has also worked as a consultant at the World Bank and in the  energy and power markets advisory teamat ICF International.

Yousef  Yousef, founder-CEO of LG Sonic, is an innovator with an out-of-the-box  vision on water quality management, big data driven technologies and  environmental monitoring. He is the Chairman of Hydrovolta and investor in  LiceSonic and Clobe2Cloud. His belief is that the value proposition of Europe  is highest in deep tech and sustainability, which will let Europe take the  lead in the global economy.

Christian Frey holds  a Master Degree in Business Informatics. He heads the team for business and  innovation in the European and International Programmes division (EIP) at  FFG. He worked for long years in the airline industry, being responsible for  international projects on revenue and sales, before returning to FFG. He has  gained wide experience in the European framework programmes (FP4, FP5, FP7,  Horizon 2020) and acts as National Contact Point (NCP) for the EIC for  Austria.

Amongst others, I was MD of an institutional Real Estate Investment funds, COO of the worlds largest real estate services company. I successfully restructured and built companies through Central- and Easter Europe.

And then, at the age of 43 I decided to do something totally different and joined the Start Up company AVILOO as COO/CFO and shareholder. AVILOO developed a sophisticated Battery Data Platform to perform independent and objective state of health checks of second hand electric vehicles.

The Austrian-born Hermann Hauser holds an MA in Physics from Vienna University and a PhD in Physics from the Cavendish Laboratory at King's College, Cambridge. In his long and successful history as an entrepreneur and venture capitalist, he co-founded and invested in some of Britain’s most innovative companies. These include Acorn Computers and its spin-off ARM, Cambridge Silicon Radio, Solexa, Entropic Research Labs and Icera. He played a major role in the emergence of the Silicon Fen. In 2015, Hermann was bestowed with an honorary KBE in recognition of his valuable services to engineering and industry. Hermann Hauser is currently Vice-Chair of the EIC Pilot Advisory Board which aims to grow Europe’s tech sectorby investing up to € 10 billion until 2027 together with the European VC industry. To support the Austrian ecosystem, Hermann has founded I.E.C.T. Hermann Hauser Management GmbH (I.E.C.T. Summer School on Entrepreneurship, Innovator’s Road) and Hermann Hauser Investment GmbH (25+ investments in mainly Austrian start-ups). He is also member of the Austrian Research Council.

Herbert Gartner is a serial entrepreneur & active business angel investing smart and hard capital in young Austrian high-tech product companies. He is focusing on industry and university spin-offs with strong growth potentials.

In 2014 Herbert co-founded the Austrian investment club eQventure, which provides young innovative high tech companies besides growth capital a strong network as well as straightforward support from successful ex-founders. Meanwhile, eQventure became the strongest Austrian angel investor network and Austria’s major venture capital provider for Austrian startups.

In 2003 Herbert Gartner founded the MEMS and semiconductor company SensorDynamics and held positions as CFO and CEO. He successfully sold the company to Maxim Integrated Products Inc, California in 2011 for $164 million.

Prior to that he held management positions at ams and Siemens. Herbert is a graduate engineer in Electrical Engineering and Business Administration from Graz University of Technology and ETH Zurich.

Johannes grew up in  Vienna and Hong Kong, studied business administration in Vienna, earned his  first professional spurs in Singapore and founded his first company at the  age of 20. He started his professional career as a PA for Rudi Klausnitzer,  spent many years in media & marketing, founded Emergy in 2003, an  advisory boutique, planning and implementing the expansion of German-speaking  companies into Asia and Africa. In 2014 he became GM of Uber in Vienna and  founded the company builderStrudelin 2016. In 2021, he started  AllRise, an organization that takes legal action against climate &  environmental offenders. With its first initiative "The Planet VS  Bolsonaro", the organization denounced Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro  for environmental destruction as a crime against humanity at the  International Criminal Court in The Hague.

Viktoria is the Programme Manager of I.E.C.T. - Hermann Hauser and responsible for the Summer School, the Innovators Road Programme and other initiatives.

Her Master's degree in International Business and Management provides the foundation to understand current processes and find leverage points as starting points for change. Her further path led her to Ernst & Young, where she gained experience in auditing financial statements for companies and start-ups, as well as in preparing financial due diligence reports. This gave her insights into a wide variety of business models and industries. She is a curious and open-minded person who challenges the status quo in business and believes that we can achieve a sustainable economy through a strong rethink and new technologies.
